Smoking Queens And Teeth-less Teens

We Real Cool
BY GWENDOLYN BROOKS

               The Pool Players.
        Seven at the Golden Shovel.

            We real cool. We
            Left school. We

            Lurk late. We
            Strike straight. We

            Sing sin. We
            Thin gin. We

            Jazz June. We
            Die soon.

Well, to all you kiddos--the troubled youngsters--peeing in open windows and slapping grandmothers, I've got something to say. You've misplaced your principles, or rather, replaced them with illegal activities. But, can you be content with yourselves? Rebelliousness, for the sake of coping, will never be a long term success story. Just as Brooks hints in the title "Seven at the Golden Shovel," we all are born "golden" with propitious opportunities, yet some are satisfied digging their own graves with a "shovel." I don't think you found the right "cool."
